“…Jaeger signed a fifteen-year contract with Cartier’s giving the firm exclusive rights to his output. This included Jaeger’s chronometers, his anchor watches with flat Jaeger calibers, and every new Jaeger invention. For their part, Cartier’s guaranteed regular annual orders of at least Fr. 250,000….

Like Louis Cartier, However, Jaeger was convinced that the future lay not with the pocket-watch but with the much more practical wristwatches This presented no technical difficulties; but it was a matter of convincing Cartier’s exclusive clientele of the ‘modernity’ of an article which only a short time before had been tried out by soldiers in trenches.

As early was 1888 Cartier’s had offered three ladies wristwatches with rose-cut diamonds, and gold link bracelets. These had been ahead of their time, since other models did not appear until 1892 and 1894, the latter having to wait until 1901 for a buyer. Like the jeweled bracelet, the wristwatch only began to come into its own when, after 1901-2, fashion ceased to dictate long sleeves, and long gloves were no longer required for evening wear. Cartier’s saw this a remarkable opportunity to establish as new form of wrist jewelry.

…Long afterwards, in 1911, Santos=Dumont agreed to have the watch put into production. When we recall the numerous clocks, snuffboxes, fans and so on à la montgolfiere which followed the balloon ascent by the Montgolfier brothers in 1783, it is no surprise that Santos Dumont’s name should have been given to a watch.

“In 1880 Constant Girard developed the innovative concept of wearing watches on the wrist. These watches were ordered personally by Emperor Wilhelm I for officers in the German Imperial Navy.

Two thousand were made, the first large-scale production of wristwatches in history. But in the day of the pocket-watch, this idea was considered too revolutionary and production was discontinued. It was not until the beginning of the next century that the wristwatch met with the success that it enjoys to this day.”
